The South Korean government plans to secure 10,000 high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) this year to accelerate the establishment of a national AI computing center, as announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT on Monday (Feb. 17).

South Korean Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok revealed this strategy during the third meeting of the AI Computing Infrastructure Special Committee. He also stated that an additional 8,000 GPUs will be purchased for the country's sixth supercomputer.

"As competition for AI dominance intensifies, the race has shifted from corporations to nations, highlighting the need for innovative ecosystems," Choi noted. He emphasized collaboration between the government and private sector to launch the National AI Computing Center, set to open in 2027.

This initiative aligns with global efforts to enhance AI capabilities, with other countries like the U.S. and France launching significant projects. The National AI Committee, formed in September 2023, aims to promote infrastructure development and address emerging technologies.

The center is expected to have a computing capacity of 1 exaflop, with total capacity projected to reach 2 exaflops through private investment. The government plans to start the project with an investment of US$277 million and has increased its AI technology budget by 25% this year, allocating 1.8 trillion Korean won for related initiatives.
