In Kowloon Park's Chinese Garden, concerns have arisen regarding the cleaning of a large water feature, as it appears that not all aquatic life was removed before draining the pool. Witnesses reported seeing several live fish struggling for survival and some turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans) exposed to the sun without water.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) conducted a preliminary investigation and found that some contracted cleaning staff did not follow the proper guidelines for handling fish and turtles during the draining of the water feature.
The LCSD stated that to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the water features, they are cleaned at least twice a year. The artificial lake in the Chinese Garden is undergoing improvement works, prompting recent drainage and cleaning efforts. Water was reintroduced to a smaller pool starting Feb. 23.
Typically, staff will temporarily relocate fish and turtles to other pools while cleaning is underway, returning them once the work is completed. The LCSD has reminded all employees to adhere to guidelines for the treatment of park animals and will issue a warning to the cleaning service contractor for this incident.
The department noted that the artificial lake and smaller pools in the Chinese Garden are meant for public enjoyment rather than for the permanent housing of fish and turtles, which have been introduced by visitors. They will continue to follow established guidelines to ensure the animals can remain in the water as much as possible.
