In response to recent criticisms from the taxi industry regarding the ride-hailing platform Gaode, which has introduced private car fleets, Chief Executive John Lee addressed the media today (Feb. 18) that improving taxi services and regulating ride-hailing services have been long-standing issues, and the government has been actively working on regulations for both sectors.
"Any extreme actions would not resolve the issues at hand and could potentially be exploited by individuals with ulterior motives, ultimately harming the public and the overall societal interest."
Lee called for rational communication to address problems collaboratively.
"The Transport and Logistics Bureau has proposed solutions, including the introduction of taxi fleets and regulations for ride-hailing platforms, to ensure that citizens can access legitimate 'point-to-point' ride-hailing services'" he noted.
Lee mentioned that a working group of the Transport Advisory Committee will meet tomorrow, inviting representatives from the taxi and ride-hailing industries to engage in constructive discussions and seek solutions.
