The Consumer Council received over 40,000 complaints last year, a 20% increase compared to the previous year. The Council's Chief Executive Gilly Wong Fung-han stated today (Feb. 15) on a television program that the rise in numbers was mainly driven by two incidents from last year, including the absence of football star Messi and the closure of PHYSICAL Fitness & Beauty. Complaints related to restaurants and entertainment categories totaled 5,810, ranking first, with 25% of those complaints associated with Messi's absence.
Wong believes that as major events and economic activities in Hong Kong increase, the issue of ticket scalping will worsen. She pointed out that some tickets can be sold for over a hundred thousand HKD each, which is an astronomical figure.
"The Consumer Council hopes that event organizers will establish clear terms and recommends that authorities implement a real-name ticketing system to curb the scalping phenomenon."
