The Hong Kong Consumer Council announced yesterday (Feb. 5) the results of its top 10 consumer news stories of 2024, with more than 14,000 votes cast, breaking the previous year's record.
Among them, the news story "PHYSICAL Fitness & Beauty closed down", which involved more than 5,000 complaints amounting to more than HK$200 million, topped the list with nearly 55% of the votes. The second and third places were taken by the news stories "Messi missed the show" and "Municipal Solid Waste Charging suspended" respectively, among which Messi's loss of the show was selected as the most outrageous news story with more than 9,400 votes.
A total of 14,429 members of the public participated in the election, a record high.
The rest of the top 10 consumer news stories covered a wide range of sectors, including "Hong Kong has 6 giant pandas, taking advantage of the development of panda economy" in the fourth place, and "Hong Kong people go north for consumption, buy food and bring raw meat into Hong Kong" in the fifth place.
Another news item related to Hong Kong's image, "Taxi drivers with 15 demerit points to be suspended from driving for 3 months", was voted as the "most heartening" consumer news item with 8,088 votes.
