According to reports from China News Service, citing Thai media, Myanmar authorities handed over 261 foreign nationals rescued from scam compounds to Thailand's Tak Province on Feb. 12. In a separate development, all members of the gang responsible for trafficking Chinese actor Wang Xing have been arrested, with Thai officials pledging legal action against them.
The rescued individuals, mostly from the Philippines, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh, include only a small number of Chinese nationals. They were freed from the KK Park and Shwe Kokko entertainment complex and arrived in Tak's Phop Phra District at around 4:30 p.m. local time.
Thai authorities stated that these foreign victims will undergo police investigations and verification processes, which are expected to take three weeks to a month. Officials aim to determine how the victims were deceived, how they entered Thailand, and their living conditions prior to working for criminal syndicates. Innocent victims will be repatriated with the assistance of their respective embassies.
In a separate operation, Thai authorities, in collaboration with regional armed groups, arrested the leader of a call center gang responsible for luring Chinese actor Wang Xing into their scam operations. The suspects will face prosecution under applicable laws.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan announced that Myanmar plans to transfer approximately 7,000 scam compound workers to Thailand in the near future. Thai authorities will work with relevant embassies to ensure their repatriation.
Myanmar had initially informed Thai authorities of a planned transfer of 53 foreign victims but later increased the number to 261 after shutting down or scaling back operations in five border towns.
