Hong Kong Tramways announced today (Feb. 11) that it has submitted a fare adjustment application to the Transport Department.
The proposed changes include an increase in the adult fare from HK$3 to HK$3.3. The child fare (ages 3 to 12) will rise from HK$1.5 to HK$1.6, and the senior fare (65 and above) will increase from HK$1.3 to HK$1.5. Monthly pass prices will remain unchanged.
This marks the first fare increase in two years, with the last adjustment occurring in June 2022, when adult fares rose from HK$2.6 to HK$3, child fares increased by HK$0.02 to HK$1.5, and senior fares went up by HK$0.01 to HK$1.3. The Legislative Council's Panel on Transport is scheduled to discuss the fare increase application on Feb. 21.
Currently, Tramways reports that passenger numbers have not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, remaining over 15% lower than in 2018. Despite this, ticket revenue continues to be a primary source of income, comparable to non-ticket revenue from business partnerships. The fare adjustment is intended to address rising operational costs, necessary maintenance projects, and fleet upgrades, ensuring the tram service can continue to operate and develop sustainably.
