The film Detective Chinatown 1900, starring mainland artists Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran, with a special appearance by Chow Yun-fat, has achieved remarkable success in mainland China, grossing RMB 2.8 billion.

It is also the first film series in Chinese cinema history to surpass RMB 10 billion in total box office revenue. The movie held its premiere in Hong Kong yesterday (Feb. 10), with the entire creative team in attendance. Chow Yun-fat expressed hope that the audience would come out in support to boost ticket sales.

The mainland's New Year film market has seen impressive box office numbers this year. In contrast, Hong Kong films have performed poorly, prompting Chow to encourage viewers to support local cinema. He emphasized, "It depends on the confidence of Hong Kong audiences in this movie. If you want to see it, you must come; if you don't, there's nothing we can do."

Many industry insiders have claimed that Hong Kong cinema is entering a winter period. Chow expressed his sadness over this situation, reminiscing about the 1980s when Southeast Asia's box office returns supported local large-scale productions. He noted that countries like South Korea, Malaysia, and Vietnam have produced their own films, reducing the need for foreign films from Hong Kong. The number of films produced has dropped from over 300 to only about 20 now, which he finds quite disheartening. He pointed out that the market is realistic and harsh, and without sufficient funding, it becomes difficult to produce films.

Chow also encouraged industry peers, stating, "This path is tough; it requires gradual effort and a long time to rebuild." When asked about standout new generation actors, he mentioned, "My friend's son Nicholas Yuen, the grandson of Lily Leung. There are many good actors in television but lack opportunities to shine."
