The owner of a claw machine shop on Fuk Wing Street near Shek Kip Mei Street in Sham Shui Po reported to the police on Tuesday (Feb. 4) that two claw machines in the store had been damaged. A total of 13 toys, valued at approximately HK$4,550, were allegedly stolen from the machines.
Authorities conducted an in-depth investigation and reviewed extensive CCTV footage from the area. On Wednesday (Feb. 5), two Vietnamese nationals—a 29-year-old man and woman—were arrested in Sham Shui Po on suspicion of "theft" and "criminal damage." The suspects, reportedly a couple, remain in custody for further questioning. The male suspect holds a Recognizance (Form No. 8) allowing him to stay in Hong Kong, while the female suspect possesses the HK identity card.
Footage revealed that the incident occurred at around 4:46 a.m. on Feb. 4. At that time, two men and a woman visited the claw machine shop and spent HK$240 trying to win toys. Initially, their behavior appeared normal, but they failed to win any prizes. About three minutes later, two men began forcefully shaking and tilting the machine in an attempt to make toys fall out, but they were unsuccessful.
One of the men, who was wearing a cap, then smashed the plastic panel covering the claw machine's prize slot and directly reached inside to grab a Labubu toy. He and his companions left the shop but returned shortly afterward to retrieve all the remaining toys inside the machine. Approximately eight minutes later, the cap-wearing man returned once more, this time having removed his jacket and donned a mask. He broke the plastic panels of two other claw machines near the entrance of the shop and stole additional toys.
