A fire broke out in a tenement unit on Un Chau Street in Sham Shui Po around 6 a.m. today (Jan. 30). The fire department successfully extinguished the fire after about 50 minutes.
Five residents, aged between 40 and 80, suffered from smoke inhalation and were sent to the hospital for treatment, all of whom are conscious. A total of 29 people were temporarily evacuated to safety.
Videos from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from the windows of the burning unit, with firefighters using an aerial platform to spray water to extinguish the flames. Neighbors reported that the fire was initially under control but later reignited.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by someone burning joss paper, and there is currently no evidence indicating criminal involvement.
