A service disruption occurred on the MTR East Rail Line near Tai Wo Station this morning (Feb. 5) due to equipment failure on an engineering vehicle, leading to crowded platforms at several stations along the line. MTR officials clarified that the incident was caused by a malfunction in the vehicle's leveling sensor system, which caused one of the compartments to tilt slightly to the left. They emphasized that the vehicle had not derailed and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore normal service by this afternoon.
Addressing allegations of a derailment, MTR denied the claims, stating that the affected vehicle remained on the tracks, despite "tilting slightly to the left." The incident occurred during the replacement of railway sleepers near Tai Wo Station. As the engineering vehicle prepared to leave, a fault in its leveling sensor system caused one compartment to tilt, although the other two compartments remained unaffected.
MTR added that the engineering vehicle underwent inspections prior to deployment, and an investigation into the cause of the malfunction is ongoing.
