Japan is experiencing the biggest cold wave since the beginning of this winter, with snowstorms occurring in many places. Hokkaido even broke the record this morning (Feb. 4), Obihiro City and Honbetsu area recorded 82 cm and 56 cm of snowfall in four hours early this morning, which is the highest since records began.
The Meteorological Agency pointed out that the cold front is strong and long-lasting, and is expected to last for about a week, with heavy snowfall and strong winds across a wide range of areas. 70 to 100 centimeters of snow will fall in the Hokuriku region, Niigata and Gifu prefectures, as well as in Kyushu and Shikoku and other plains where there was little snow in the past, and there is also a risk of heavy snowfall.
The agency is urging people to be on the alert for blizzards and huge waves, as well as power outages, tree collapses and avalanches caused by snow. Officials from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism also urged people to refrain from non-essential travel, as heavy snowfall could cause road traffic disruptions, road closures and delays in public transportation.
