Singapore's Health Sciences Authority (HSA) announced on Monday (Feb. 3) that it seized 970,707 units of illegal health products in 2024 and removed 7,351 listings from local e-commerce and social media platforms.

Codeine cough syrup was the most common seized product, making up 54% of the total, followed by sexual enhancement medications at 19%, sedatives at 18%, and other prescription drugs at 9%. Among the removed listings, 37% were for skin and hair enhancement products, while 24% were for contact lenses. An additional 7% included treatments for chronic conditions like high cholesterol, hypertension, allergies, and pain relief.

The HSA also issued warnings to 2,868 online sellers last year. Notably, three consumers were hospitalized due to severe adverse effects from illegal products.

"Health products that have previously been detected to contain harmful ingredients may resurface for sale under different packaging to evade detection," stated Associate Professor Chan Cheng-leng, director of HSA's Health Products Regulation Group. "Consumers need to be aware that illegal health products often masquerade as quick fixes and miracle cures."
