Man turns public housing into drug warehouse for HK$50,000 reward with HK$10 mn worth of ice seized
On Jan. 16, police launched a drug operation in Sha Tin, resulting in the arrest of a 30-year-old local man for the offense of "trafficking in dangerous drugs."
Authorities seized 19 kilograms of suspected ice, with an estimated street value of around HK$10 million. A briefing on the case was conducted today (Jan. 17).
Inspector Ng Ka-wai from the Narcotics Bureau explained that investigators, after thorough inquiries, believed a drug trafficking group was using a public housing unit in the Sha Tin area as a drug storage facility. Last night (Jan. 16), officers intercepted a local man and searched his residence, uncovering 19 kilograms of suspected ice along with various drug packaging tools. He was subsequently arrested for drug trafficking.
The arrested man, surnamed Lee, is a construction worker and is currently in custody as investigations continue. He is expected to be charged with the trafficking of dangerous drugs, with the case scheduled to be heard at the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Court on Jan. 18.
Police believe this operation has successfully dismantled a drug trafficking group's storage facility, preventing the drugs from reaching the market. Investigations suggest that the group had been operating for no more than a month. Initial findings also indicate that some individuals, lured by monetary incentives, were willing to take risks for a reward of HK$50,000, not only receiving a large quantity of drugs but also acting as managers of the drug storage facility.
Authorities reiterated that trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious crime, punishable by a maximum life sentence and a fine of HK$5 million. Police urged the public not to engage in illegal activities.
