Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday (Jan. 27) in Beijing. Wang stressed that the improvement and development of China-India relations are fully in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples and are conducive to safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the countries of the Global South.
During the meeting with Misri, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that since the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year in Kazan, the two sides have earnestly implemented the important consensus reached by the two leaders, engaged in positive interactions at all levels and accelerated the process of improving China-India relations.
Wang said China and India should seize the opportunity to meet each other halfway, explore more substantive measures, and commit themselves to mutual understanding, mutual support and mutual achievement, rather than mutual suspicion, alienation and mutual depletion.
The improvement and development of China-Indian relations are fully in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, conducive to safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South countries, and conducive to the contribution of the two ancient civilizations to peace, stability and development and prosperity in Asia and the world, Wang told Misri.
According to a readout from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Misri said that India and China have carried out a series of beneficial dialogues and communications in accordance with the consensus reached at the Kazan meeting between the leaders of the two countries, appropriately managing and resolving their differences and promoting the relaunch of practical cooperation in various fields.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry, Misri also claimed that India is ready to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with China and will fully support China's chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in all its endeavors.
Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times on Monday that China-India relations have recently stabilized and are gradually warming up.
The statements of the two diplomats show that they are following the strategic leadership of the leaders of the two countries, strengthening dialogues at the diplomatic level, and showing willingness to promote bilateral relations to return to the track of healthy development at an early date, Qian said.
Before Misri's China visit, Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi met with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Beijing in December 2024.
We can clearly see that China and India are advancing bilateral relations in an orderly and progressive manner: from the strategic level, to the marco diplomatic level, and then to the specific level, Qian said.
According to a press release by the Ministry of External Affairs of India, Misri, whose scheduled China visit last from January 26 to 27, was expected to attend a meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between India and China in Beijing. Issues to be discussed include the resumption of direct flights between India and China, issuance of visas, particularly for businesspersons and journalists, and ironing out trade issues, according to Indian news outlets.
On Sunday (Jan. 26), Misri met Liu Jianchao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and the two sides exchanged views on jointly implementing the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthening exchanges and dialogues, and promoting the improvement and healthy and stable development of China-India relations, as well as international and regional issues of common concern.
