John Lee shares insights on President Xi's speech on 25th anniversary of Macao's return
On the morning of Jan. 9, the National Hong Kong and Macao Research Association held a seminar in Beijing to learn and implement the important speech spirit of President Xi Jinping at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the Motherland and the inauguration ceremony of the sixth term administration of the Macao Special Administrative Region.
Chief Executive John Lee attended the seminar and posted on social media that President Xi Jinping's important speech has guided the future development of Hong Kong and Macao and the utilization of the institutional advantages of "one country, two systems", which holds significant practical guidance.
Lee also expressed his own insights.
Lee first pointed out that "one country, two systems" is a system with significant institutional advantages and strong vitality.
"Society often discusses the unique advantages of 'two systems', but the foundation of 'two systems' is based on 'one country.' We must deeply understand the strong advantages of 'one country,' consolidate, leverage, and make good use of them, and combine them with the advantages of 'two systems' to correctly promote the practice of 'one country, two systems.'"
Lee stated, "The values and concepts of 'one country, two systems' have significance for the era and the world. President Xi Jinping pointed out that 'one country, two systems' embodies the values of peace, inclusiveness, openness, and shared development, which belong to China and the world."
This important statement, according to Lee, allows people to deeply understand "one country, two systems" from a strategic perspective of global governance, providing "Chinese wisdom" and a "Chinese solution" for promoting global governance, making a significant contribution to human political civilization, with important new connotations and missions that people must collectively safeguard.
Lee emphasized the need to remember the four regular understandings for advancing "one country, two systems": uphold "one country", make good use of "two systems"; maintain security, promote high-quality development; leverage unique advantages, strengthen internal and external connections; promote core values, and foster harmony. He also pointed out that "one country, two systems" has entered a new stage, serving as a key demonstration of showcasing China's modernization and the common destiny.
He mentioned that after taking office, he implemented various reforms, with last year's Policy Address themed "Reform for Enhancing Development and Building Our Future Together," introducing over 600 policy measures covering different areas, deepening reforms, consolidating and enhancing the international financial, shipping, and trade center status, and exploring new economic growth points.
"Hong Kong should continue to leverage the advantages of 'one country, two systems,' focusing on economic development and infrastructure construction, enhancing governance efficiency, leveraging international advantages, maintaining social stability, promoting the development of characteristic industries, advancing the integration of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area market, and creating more development opportunities for the youth."
Lastly, Lee stated that he will lead the Hong Kong government team to implement the spirit of President Xi Jinping's speech, focusing on advancing the "one country, two systems" cause, making Hong Kong more prosperous, contributing more to the country, and shining internationally once again.
