Today (Jan. 28) marks New Year's Eve, and authorities have announced that there will be no special extended customs arrangements at land boundary crossings during this year's Lunar New Year period.
The vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Guangdong Boundary Crossing Bus Association views this decision positively, stating that cross-border bus companies can allocate resources effectively based on peak daytime traffic.
In a radio program today, the association noted that since last Friday (Jan. 17), residents have been traveling north to celebrate the New Year, with the peak travel period expected from the first to the third day of the Lunar New Year. The return peak is anticipated on the fifth day of the new year, when boundary-crossing bus companies will increase their services by 20% to manage passenger flow.
Additionally, based on past experiences, the flow of people on New Year's Eve is generally not too heavy, with a noticeable increase only after the fireworks display on the second night. To meet the needs of residents and tourists, bus companies will add services at popular pick-up points in Wan Chai, Prince Edward, and West Kowloon after this year's Spring Festival fireworks show, helping to manage the returning mainland visitors. Zhang estimates that the hour following the display will see a peak in northbound traffic, and he believes that increasing the bus frequency will effectively facilitate the flow of people.
