
On Monday (Jan. 27), Google announced that Google Maps will rename the "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" in the U.S. geographic naming system. This change is limited to the United States, while Mexico will retain the name "Gulf of Mexico." Users outside of these two countries will see both names on Google Maps.
On Jan. 20, Trump signed an executive order to rename the "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America." The executive order stated that the U.S. Secretary of the Interior should take all "necessary actions" for the name change within 30 days.
In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pushed back earlier this month by presenting a 17th-century world map, suggesting that North America, including the United States, should be renamed "Mexican America," a historical name used in early maps of the region.
