The Director of the Immigration Department, Benson Kwok, held a press conference this afternoon (Jan. 27) to review the department's work for 2024.
He addressed the situation of Hong Kong residents trapped in Myanmar's scam operations, stating that a 29-year-old man, who was recently rescued, is scheduled to return to Hong Kong later today, accompanied by members of a dedicated task force. The department will provide practical support based on the wishes of the family and involved individuals for the remaining assistance cases.
The 29-year-old man was freed with the help of Thai authorities and has since returned to Thailand from Myanmar.
Kwok noted that the biggest challenge in rescue operations is reliance on local law enforcement. To date, the Security Bureau has received 28 requests for assistance, with 17 individuals already returned to Hong Kong. Among the remaining 11, the rescued man will be included in today's return. The Bureau will continue discussions with local authorities regarding the rescue of the remaining 10 Hong Kong residents, aiming to bring them back as soon as possible. The government is committed to strengthening preventive measures and increasing public awareness of national consular protection and travel safety.
