HK tourist killed by train while taking photos in Hokkaido
A tragic accident occurred in Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan, on the JR Hakodate Line near Asari Station at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. A 61-year-old female tourist from Hong Kong was struck by a rapid airport train heading towards New Chitose Airport. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, she succumbed to her injuries.
Reports indicate that the woman was standing on the train tracks facing the sea while taking photos at the time of the incident. Her husband, who was positioned farther away, was unharmed. The local Otaru Police Station is investigating the details of the accident. It was observed that the accident site was about 50 meters from a railway crossing and located in a prohibited area. The official crossing, which is open to pedestrians, is obscured by houses and trees, while the accident site offers a clear view of the sea, potentially attracting tourists to trespass for photography purposes.
The Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Sapporo has contacted Japanese authorities to understand the situation and has pledged to provide necessary consular assistance to the victim's family.
HK's Immigration Department confirmed that it has been in touch with the victim's family and is offering advice and assistance to the family.
Additionally, reports highlight that the area has long struggled with tourists ignoring safety regulations, causing frustration among local residents. They have called for stricter measures to prevent such incidents.
