Today (Jan. 21), correctional officers at Pik Uk Correctional Institution successfully intervened to prevent an 18-year-old male inmate from committing suicide by hanging.
The person in custody was sentenced to undergo training at a rehabilitation center for the offense of conspiracy to defraud in January 2025.
At 1:24 am, staff discovered the inmate attempting to hang himself in a hospital ward using his shirt tied to a metal grille. They immediately summoned support personnel to rescue him and provide first aid. The inmate was conscious at the time and was subsequently transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. The department's clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.
A spokesperson for the Correctional Services Department stated that the department takes all feasible measures to prevent inmate suicides or self-harm, including administrative arrangements, facility improvements, staff training, and emergency care.
