Xiaohongshu introduces translation feature to support multilingual communication
Chinese social platform Xiaohongshu (RedNote) has rolled out a new translation feature in its latest update, enabling users to translate posts and comments into multiple languages, including English, German, and Russian. The feature is even capable of translating internet slang, aiming to facilitate seamless cross-cultural communication.
This update comes amidst an influx of new users from the US, as TikTok has been officially banned in the country due to the enforcement of the "sell or ban" order. Many former TikTok users—self-described as "TikTok refugees"—have flocked to Xiaohongshu, fostering intercultural exchanges between Chinese and American users.
During testing by the DotDotNews reporter, the translation feature proved user-friendly. Users can simply click the "Translate" button next to posts or comments to view translations. However, the feature does not extend to private messages. Depending on the system language, translations will automatically switch between Chinese to English or English to Chinese. Notably, the translation function does not activate for mixed-language content, such as posts containing both Chinese and English.
To access the translation feature, users must update their app to the latest version: iOS 8.69.1, Android 8.69.1, or Google Play 8.59.
