TikTok notified its US users on the evening of Jan. 18 that the platform will temporarily suspend its services starting Jan. 19 as a federal ban on the app takes effect.

Earlier reports revealed that on Jan. 18, former US President Donald Trump stated in an interview that he is highly likely to grant a 90-day extension to the enforcement of the TikTok ban after taking office. Trump mentioned he has not yet made a final decision but is considering announcing the extension on Jan. 20.

On Jan. 17, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the federal ban on TikTok, paving the way for the app to be removed from US app stores as early as Jan. 19.

The ban follows a law signed by President Joe Biden on April 24 last year, requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform to a non-Chinese entity within 270 days. Failure to comply would result in TikTok being banned in the US.
