Suspected carbon monoxide leak in Cheung Sha Wan office sends two security guards to hospital
An industrial accident occurred in Cheung Sha Wan in the early hours of Jan. 19, where a suspected carbon monoxide leak left two security guards hospitalized. Police received a report around 3 a.m. that an unidentified gas was detected at the office of a security company located on Cheung Sha Wan Road.
A male and a female security guard reported feeling unwell after noticing the gas. The female guard, aged 55, collapsed and sustained a head injury, while the male guard, aged 34, also experienced symptoms of discomfort. Both individuals were conscious when transported to Caritas Medical Centre for initial treatment before being transferred to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
Police and fire services arrived at the scene and conducted an investigation, suspecting the leak was caused by carbon monoxide. Preliminary findings indicate that the incident occurred after employees used a gas-powered generator during a building power outage at the Trade Square, 681 Cheung Sha Wan Road. The generator was left running unattended, causing the carbon monoxide buildup.
The Labour Department has been notified, and authorities have classified the case as an industrial accident.
