Internet fraud cases are hard to guard against! Legislative Council Member Kingsley Wong revealed on social media yesterday (Jan. 17) that scammers used AI to mimic his voice and tone, impersonating him through voice calls to borrow money from his friends, who unsuspectingly suffered losses amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.
In his post, Wong mentioned that the incident occurred when a friend mentioned "repaying money," which seemed strange to him. After further inquiry, he discovered that the friend mistakenly believed a phone call's voice. The 'AI Kinsley' urgently needed money for turnover, sounding exactly like him, and the friends, without suspicion, transferred tens of thousands of dollars three times to the scammer's designated account. After some time had passed without repayment, the friends questioned him, and only then did he realize that they had fallen victim to online fraud, losing their money.
Wong reiterated that he did not borrow money from anyone, has reported the incident to the police, and feels deeply unsettled about the financial losses suffered by his friends due to the scam. He hopes that law enforcement personnel will swiftly bring the scammers to justice.
