15 Lunar New Year Fairs to start next Thursday, with about 1,500 stalls in total
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) announced today (Jan. 17) that the 2025 Lunar New Year Fairs will be held from Jan. 23 (the 24th day of this lunar year) to Jan. 29 (the first day of the lunar new year) at 15 locations.
The markets will operate from 7 am for a total of seven days, featuring approximately 1,500 stalls selling fresh and dried goods, fast food, festive plants, flowers, and decorations to help residents celebrate the new year.
A spokesperson stated that technology will be employed to monitor conditions within the markets, and crowd control measures will be implemented as necessary. The crowd levels at the 15 markets will be displayed on the FEHD website using a traffic light system: green for low crowding, yellow for moderate crowding, and red for high crowding. Entry will stop 15 minutes before the markets close each day.
The spokesperson also mentioned that multiple waste reduction and recycling measures will be in place this year. In addition to recycling commonly recyclable items like paper, plastic, and metal, contractors will collect bamboo sticks, wooden pallets, polystyrene boxes, and withered or unsold flowers for reuse. The department will also collect unsold flowers and potted plants voluntarily donated by stall owners, which will be given to elderly homes, disability care facilities, and public hospitals by a team of volunteers on the first day of the lunar new year.
