California wildfires: 1977 VW van miraculously survives deadly Palisades fire
California wildfires continue to wreak havoc, claiming 25 lives and destroying over 12,000 buildings. Yet, amidst the devastation, a 1977 Volkswagen van miraculously survived unscathed, becoming a viral symbol of hope.
The bright blue van, nicknamed "Azul," was photographed by an Associated Press journalist standing untouched in the middle of charred ruins. The photo quickly spread across social media, with many calling it a rare source of solace during the wildfire tragedy.
Preston Martin, the van's former owner, shared his disbelief in an earlier interview: "There is magic in that van. It makes no sense why this happened. It should have been toasted, but here we are."
Martin purchased the van during his junior year of college, refurbished its interior, and lived in it to save on rent for his final year. Last summer, he sold the van to his friend and business partner, Megan Krystle Weinraub, who affectionately named it "Azul."
When the massive Palisades wildfire broke out, Megan evacuated with her dog. Days later, a neighbor sent her the now-famous photo showing "Azul" completely unharmed. Megan immediately called Martin to share the astonishing news.
"It's so cool that it's become this, like, beacon of hope," Martin said.
