According to data from the China Internet Network Information Center, the number of online food delivery users in China has reached 545 million, accounting for approximately 50% of the total Internet population.
This figure far exceeds that of other countries, making China the largest market for food delivery globally.
As of Jan. 15, reports indicate that since the first food delivery transaction in 2008, China has emerged as the world's leading food delivery market. Data from the China Hospitality Association shows that in 2023, the market size of China's food delivery sector will be approximately 1.2 trillion RMB, representing 22.6% of total restaurant revenue. Online marketing models, such as food delivery, have become crucial profit channels for dining businesses.
Shi Xiaoming from the China Hospitality Association noted that despite facing challenges since its inception, the growth of online food delivery platforms and changing consumer habits have transformed food delivery into one of the fastest-evolving industries, continuously generating new points of consumption growth.
Shi pointed out that food delivery has evolved from a simple restaurant delivery service into a complete ecosystem, encompassing restaurant brands, packaging companies, raw material suppliers, operational agents, and shared mobility, among other areas.
Analysts suggest that, in light of the expanding food delivery market, future support for related businesses should focus on institutional innovation, technological empowerment, and cross-industry collaboration. This approach aims to establish a green and sustainable supply chain, reduce packaging usage, enhance delivery safety and compliance, and promote high-quality development within the food delivery industry.
