According to American media, Edwin Castro, the 30-year-old winner of the record-breaking US$2.04 billion Powerball jackpot, has recently become one of the victims of the wildfires raging in Los Angeles. His ocean-view mansion in Malibu, valued at US$3.85 million (approximately HK$29.98 million), has been completely destroyed.
CNN reported that the historic Powerball lottery prize of US$2.04 billion was drawn in November 2022, with Castro as the lucky winner. After taxes, he took home approximately US$1 billion (around HK$7.8 billion) and subsequently purchased several properties in Malibu, Altadena, and Hollywood Hills.
The report indicates that Castro's Malibu mansion was engulfed by wildfires that have been spreading since Jan. 7, resulting in the total loss of the structure. Additionally, his other property in Hollywood Hills, worth US$25.5 million (approximately HK$200 million), is also under threat from the fires. Fortunately, his home in Altadena, valued at US$3.98 million (about HK$30.99 million), along with a gas station he purchased at the same time, remain intact.
