4.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off Guangdong coast, mild tremors felt in HK
A 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:40 p.m. today (Jan. 10) over the sea south of Shanwei, Guangdong, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) confirmed. The epicenter is located near 21.30N, 115.72E, about 200 kilometers southeast of the HKO (about 200 kilometers southeast of HK). The focal depth is about 10 kilometers.
The HKO received over 10 reports from local residents who felt mild shaking, described as lasting for a few seconds. The initial estimate gave a local intensity of III (three) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, which is felt indoors.
