Devastating Xizang earthquake claims 126 lives, over 61,000 affected
A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Shigatse City, Xizang, China, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. According to a press conference held by the regional government of Xizang on Jan. 9, the earthquake has claimed at least 126 lives and affected over 61,500 residents.
The earthquake, which occurred with high intensity and severe ground shaking, has left many communities devastated. As of 6:00 a.m. on Jan. 9, local authorities reported significant casualties and damage in the affected areas.
A total of 337 injured individuals have been admitted to hospitals. Of these, 246 have been discharged after receiving treatment, while 91 remain hospitalized, including 19 in critical condition. Medical efforts are transitioning from emergency response to standardized care.
