Cold weather alert! Temperatures in various areas drop to 12°C or below
Under the influence of an intense winter monsoon, the weather will be persistently cold in the morning over the weekend (Jan. 11 to 12), according to Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).
Temperatures will be around 11 degrees Celsius in the urban areas, and the weather will be very cold over parts of the New Territories and on high ground. Winds will occasionally be strong on high ground, where the wind chill effect will be more significant. Meanwhile, under clear skies, radiation cooling will be rather significant overnight, with a chance of frost over inland areas of the New Territories and on high ground.
Today, temperatures in various areas of Hong Kong dropped to 12 degrees Celsius or below, about three to four degrees lower than yesterday (Jan. 9). The weather is generally sunny today, with a cold morning and very dry conditions during the day. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 17 degrees Celsius.
Public members are reminded to keep warm and care for elderly persons and persons with chronic medical conditions, said HKO.
