On Jan. 6 local time, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump responded to the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau that Trudeau is still the Prime Minister of Canada until someone takes over, at which time Canada will welcome a "lame duck" Prime Minister, while its largest trading partner will impose high tariffs on its exports.
Trump said on his social media platform: "Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned."
Trump claimed that if Canada were to merge with the United States, there would be no tariffs, and tax revenue would decrease significantly.
