According to CCTV News, on Jan. 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill by a vote of 264 to 159 aimed at detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants accused of misdemeanors.
The bill mandates that federal law enforcement agencies detain undocumented immigrants charged with minor crimes such as theft and expands the categories of offenses that could lead to deportation. Additionally, it grants state attorneys general the authority to sue federal officials over safety concerns related to illegal immigration.
The legislation is named after Laken Riley, a student who was killed in Georgia by an undocumented immigrant who had previously been arrested for theft but was not detained.
The New York Times reports that the passage of this bill marks a shift toward a more hardline stance on immigration by the Republican Party, which could have far-reaching implications for U.S. immigration policy in the future.
