A Hong Kong man recently lost his Octopus card and discovered that it had been used to make purchases totaling HK$229.4 within 44 minutes before he could report it lost. Reflecting on the incident, he wryly commented, "I'll just consider it as paying for peace of mind."
The man shared his story in the Facebook group, explaining that he had misplaced his Octopus card in Mong Kok one evening. As he was about to report it lost, he discovered someone had already picked it up and used it. He admitted, "I don't plan to get it back," acknowledging his carelessness but emphasizing the importance of good morals. He added, "I hope the person who picked it up can enjoy their meal and toys and work on improving themselves."
The man uploaded a detailed transaction history from his Octopus app, showing how the finder had gone on a shopping spree. Within 44 minutes, the card was used at "Sui Wah Trading" and "Mastery Toy" for an MTR ride costing HK$7.4. Finally, the finder bought dinner at "Tong Kee Bao Dim," totaling HK$229.4.
Some sharp-eyed netizens noticed three transactions involving buying toys, leading many to speculate that the finder might be a child. Comments included, "Looks like a kid," "Judging from the spending pattern, it's likely a child," and "An adult wouldn't bother eating at Tong Kee Bao Dim after spending so much on toys." Another netizen joked, "If the remaining balance isn't much, consider it a good deed—you'll feel better."
Some netizens suggested that the man should report the incident to the police, stating, "If you report it, they'll likely catch the person. These places have cameras." Others recommended canceling the Automatic Add Value Service linked to the card, warning of its risks: "It's really convenient but also very dangerous," and "Cancel it immediately!"
