Hong Kong Sevens prepares for next-level event at Kai Tak stadium
Hong Kong China Rugby on Monday(Jan. 6) said the first Rugby Sevens tournament to be held at the new stadium in Kai Tak will be a next-level event.
James Farndon, Hong Kong China Rugby CEO, made the comments after authorities said the first test event at the main stadium of the Kai Tak Sports Park went well.
Farndon said his operations team is now busy with debriefing and reviewing with stakeholders ahead of the Rugby Sevens, which will be held at the end of March.
"Hong Kong Sevens is famous around the world, of course, as the event that every Sevens player wants to play in. And I think the first tournament in the new stadium is going to take that to an even higher level," he said.
He said athletes and fans are excited about the new state-of-the-art venue.
"The players will be able to enjoy [the experience] in the much better surroundings of Kai Tak which is also more conducive to enhancing their performance slightly on the pitch, so that'll be great for the players," he said.
Farndon noted that the stadium in Kai Tak was at 20 percent capacity during Sunday's test.
"Based on the atmosphere we had, I think the fans are in for something really incredible" during the Rugby Sevens, he added.
He also pointed out that the new South Stand will be bigger and would overlook the Hong Kong skyline.
"Probably the most unique feature in the stadium is the window looking out on the Hong Kong skyline on the South Stand terrace, and that's going to make the experience even more memorable for fans."
