China achieves notable advancement in Global Innovation Index 2024, moving up to 11th place

China has risen to 11th place on Global Innovation Index 2024, a senior official of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), stated at a press conference today (Jan. 3).

Zhao Chenxin, Vice Chairman of the NDRC, noted that in 2024, China will develop new types of productivity tailored to local conditions, providing a continuous source of new momentum for high-quality development.

On one hand, the foundational systems supporting comprehensive innovation are being accelerated and improved, while the systematic construction of major scientific and technological infrastructure is progressing steadily. Significant innovative achievements, such as the lunar exploration program and heavy-duty gas turbines, continue to emerge.

On the other hand, the effects of innovation-driven development are becoming increasingly evident, with traditional industries upgrading rapidly and emerging industries developing at a faster pace. Future industries are also accelerating their layout, and the construction of a modern industrial system is advancing quickly. The growth rate of added value in high-tech manufacturing continues to outpace the overall growth rate of the manufacturing sector.

Zhao also stated that in terms of regional development, the leading roles of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area are further strengthening. The ecological environment quality in the Yangtze and Yellow River basins is steadily improving, and positive results have been achieved in the integration of regional strategic development.
