Time-traveling flight: Cathay Pacific Flight 880 crosses International Date Line to go back to 2024
A flight that feels like time travel! On Jan. 1, 2025, Cathay Pacific Flight 880 departed from Hong Kong at 12:38 a.m. (local time) and completed a 14-hour journey across 9 time zones, crossing the International Date Line to land in Los Angeles at approximately 8:01 p.m. Pacific Time on Dec. 31, 2024. This unique experience allowed passengers to "travel back in time" and celebrate New Year's Eve twice.
According to flight tracking platform FlightRadar24, Cathay Pacific Flight 880 isn't the only flight offering passengers the chance to experience two New Year celebrations. United Airlines Flight 200, departing Guam at 7:25 a.m. Chamorro Standard Time on Jan. 1, also crosses the International Date Line, landing at 6:22 p.m. Hawaii time on Dec. 31. Passengers on this route can witness the first sunrise of 2025, followed by a 2024 sunset.
