South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport announced on Jan. 1 that the flight data recorder (FDR) from the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 plane crash will be sent to the US for analysis. The ministry stated that the FDR's exterior sustained extensive damage, making data extraction challenging. The FDR is one of the two black boxes retrieved from the wreckage.

Earlier the same day, the ministry confirmed that it had successfully extracted data from the cockpit voice recorder, the other black box. Efforts are underway to convert the data for further analysis.

Aircraft are typically equipped with two black boxes: the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. South Korean authorities have warned that determining the cause of the crash will require a lengthy and detailed investigation due to its complexity.

The crash occurred on Dec. 29 at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province. The Jeju Air plane veered off the runway during landing and collided with the airport's perimeter wall. Tragically, 179 of the 181 people on board lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest aviation accidents in South Korea's history. Only two survivors were rescued from the wreckage.
