The Airport Authority Hong Kong announced today (Dec. 27) that it will trial autonomous vehicles in 2025 to transport passengers between the airport's SkyCity and the Hong Kong port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Autonomous vehicles are expected to undergo testing in August 2025 and begin operations in December. Each vehicle will accommodate up to 16 passengers and travel at a maximum speed of 40 km/h, making the journey between the Hong Kong port and 11 SKIES in SkyCity in approximately 3 minutes. Initially, 26 autonomous vehicles will be deployed.
Steven Yiu Siu-chung, Executive Director of Airport Operations at the Airport Authority, stated that after clearing customs at the Hong Kong port of the bridge, passengers would board the vehicles from the platform and follow a dedicated route through the under-construction sea bridge to SkyCity. The initial estimated passenger capacity is 500 per hour in one direction, with plans to increase this to 1,000.
The Airport Authority aims to extend the autonomous driving system to Tung Chung Station by 2028, increasing the number of autonomous vehicles to 100. The hourly capacity is projected to reach 5,000 passengers, with a gradual increase to 8,000.
Currently, 84 shared service vehicles operate in the airport's restricted area, providing 24-hour service via a mobile app and hotline. The Airport Authority plans to introduce autonomous vehicles within two years and further expand the fleet.
