The opening ceremony of the Huangmaohai Sea-crossing Channel, the third national-level cross-sea passage project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, was held today (Dec. 11) in Zhuhai.
The opening of the Channel was announced at 10:34 a.m. on-site. The Channel officially started trial operation at 3 p.m. today, with an initial period exempt from road tolls.
Public Hearing on Vehicle Toll Rates to be Held on December 30
According to the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, a public hearing on the toll rates for vehicles using the Channel will be held on Dec. 30. Two proposed toll rates include 33 RMB per trip or 34 RMB per trip for private vehicles (with 7 seats or fewer).
As the western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Channel is approximately 31 kilometers long, built to the standard of a dual six-lane highway with a designed speed of 100 km/h. The T3 contract section constructed by CCCC Highway Consultants has a total length of about 4.05 kilometers; the key structure, the Gaolan Port Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 700 meters and a double-cable system.
Travel Time from Zhuhai to Jiangmen to Reduce to Half an Hour
The tower of the Gaolan Port Bridge has a total height of 254.7 meters, often referred to as the "Canton Tower on the sea," with a maximum diameter of 18 meters and a minimum diameter of 8.5 meters. Each segment of the main tower has a continuously changing spatial shape, leading to unique formwork for each segment, making the construction complex. To address this challenge, the project team of CCCC Highway Consultants innovated construction methods, suspending the entire segment of the spatially curved tower with precision up to millimeters at high altitudes.
The Channel project connects to the Hezhou–Gaolan Port Expressway in the east and links to the Xintai Expressway in the west, intersecting with the Xibuyanhai Expressway. After the project is completed, the land travel time from Zhuhai to Jiangmen will be reduced from over 1 hour to around 30 minutes, shortening the journey from Hong Kong to the western Guangdong region by more than half an hour.
