Male teacher jailed for 6 months for filming up students' skirts in class
A 26-year-old male secondary school teacher in Hong Kong has been sentenced to six months in prison for secretly filming up the skirts of multiple female students during class. The teacher surnamed Chan, pleaded guilty to five counts of unlawfully recording or observing intimate parts and was sentenced on Dec. 24 at Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts.
The incidents occurred between Jan. 22 and Feb. 1, 2024, at a secondary school in Tuen Mun. The victims, identified as female students A, B, C, and D, were all 13 years old at the time. Chan had been employed at the school for only five months when the offenses were committed.
According to case details, Chan repeatedly used excuses such as tying his shoelaces or picking up dropped chalk to place his phone under the skirts of female students to record videos. In one instance, while a student was solving a problem on the blackboard, Chan placed his phone between her legs and pretended to tie his shoelaces, recording for 10 seconds before retrieving his device. A male student witnessed Chan's actions. On other occasions, Chan repeated the same behavior with other students, pretending to drop chalk or tie his shoes to position his phone under their skirts.
One of the victims confronted Chan after noticing his actions, but he remained silent and ignored her. The incidents came to light when a student reported the matter to another teacher, prompting the school to notify the police. Chan was arrested but remained silent under police caution.
Acting Principal Magistrate Tang Siu-hung noted during sentencing that the pre-sentence report indicated a high risk of reoffending. The judge emphasized that Chan's actions were a serious breach of trust and involved multiple offenses committed over a span of just 10 days. The court ruled that imprisonment was the only appropriate punishment. Chan was sentenced to two months in prison for each of the five charges.
