NATO Secretary General predicts pressure from Trump on European defense spending
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte anticipates that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump may pressure European allies to increase their defense spending.
In an interview with German media, Rutte stated that Trump will likely expect European allies to do more. NATO member countries have committed to spending at least 2% of their GDP on defense, with many European allies currently meeting this target. However, Rutte warned that if defense spending does not increase further, deterrence against Russia could become problematic in 4 to 5 years.
He did not specify whether NATO allies should set their defense spending target at 3% or higher. During the U.S. election campaign, Trump suggested that NATO's defense commitment should be raised to 3%, and recent reports indicate he might even call for an increase to 5%.
