HK taxi drivers can now accept PayMe via Octopus
Octopus announced today (Dec. 23) that Hong Kong taxi drivers can now accept payments through PayMe by HSBC via the Octopus network. This new feature expands digital payment options for over 27,000 taxi drivers across the city, supporting the growing move toward cashless transactions.
Octopus has been working closely with the taxi industry and government to provide a simple, one-stop payment solution, facilitating both contactless and QR code payments. To encourage the adoption of electronic payments, Octopus does not charge transaction fees. Currently, 70% of taxi drivers are already using the Octopus for Business app to process payments.
Taxi drivers who are already using the app do not need to reapply. They only need to update the Octopus for Business app to enjoy the new service and start accepting payments from more platforms. The app allows drivers to input the fare amount, enabling passengers to pay using either their Octopus card or by scanning a QR code.
For drivers who have yet to onboard, both Android and iOS users can download the Octopus for Business app and submit simple documents via their mobile phones. Once approved, accounts can be set up within three working days. Drivers will receive a merchant kit, including a mobile Octopus reader, which pairs with a driver's phone via Bluetooth. By activating the "Cashier Mode" in the app and entering the fare amount, the Octopus reader will display the payment amount instantly.
