State Security warns of risks in online comment sections
Today (Dec. 23), the Ministry of State Security published an article mentioning espionage in social media comment areas highlighting the growing role of online social media comment areas as platforms for public interaction. The ministry's findings indicate that some foreign intelligence agencies are using these spaces to steal state secrets and disrupt online order, posing a threat to national security.
Disguised Identities for Intelligence Gathering:
Foreign spies may pose as enthusiasts in discussions related to politics, economics, military, or technology. They use inquiries, debates, and social interactions to extract sensitive information about state secrets. The ministry noted instances where spies have gathered sensitive data on scientific project parameters through video comment sections.
Spreading Rumors to Disturb Public Perception:
Foreign intelligence agencies might recruit "internet trolls" or employ bots to disseminate false information aimed at discrediting the government and its policies. Reports indicate that these entities have been flooding comment sections with fabricated historical narratives to undermine public respect for national cultural heroes and history.
Manipulating Topics to Ignite Public Disputes:
Agencies may create numerous accounts to manipulate discussions and escalate conflicts. The ministry observed attempts to incite public unrest through provocative comments on sensitive topics, aiming to sway public opinion and create division.
Here are some recommendations for the public below.
Enhance Security Awareness:
Citizens, especially those in sensitive positions, should refrain from sharing confidential information in comment sections and avoid disclosing their connections to sensitive entities.
Improve Information Discernment:
In the face of overwhelming online information, individuals should not be misled by false narratives or malicious prompts. Any harmful or sensitive content should be documented and reported promptly.
Adhere to Truthfulness:
People are advised against blindly sharing unverified information, fabricating stories, or spreading derogatory remarks about national history and achievements.
The National Security Ministry emphasizes the need for vigilance among the public to counteract the threats posed by foreign intelligence operations in the digital realm.
