State Security urges public vigilance against Crowdsourcing used to target sensitive information
China's Ministry of State Security has warned that foreign intelligence agencies use "crowdsourcing models" to conduct covert espionage activities. These methods, which rely on internet platforms, are highly disguised and pose a significant threat to national security.
The ministry explained that "crowdsourced espionage" involves breaking down intelligence tasks and recruiting individuals through online platforms. Participants unknowingly gather fragmented data, which is later analyzed and compiled to steal sensitive information. This method makes it difficult for participants and platform operators to recognize the true intent behind such tasks.
The ministry identified targeted data, including marine hydrology, mineral resources, energy reserves, and high-precision geographic information. Vulnerable groups include individuals near military zones, university students, and frequent social media or job site users. Citizens are urged to enhance their information security awareness, avoid sharing sensitive details online, and report suspicious activities to local state security authorities.
