Recently, a wild boar seriously injured a person in Hong Kong's Ta Kwu Ling. The Under Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Ms. Diane Wong Shuk-han, responded in writing today (Dec. 18) to Legislative Council member David Chan Yuet-ming's inquiry, stating that according to statistics from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the overall number of wild boars has decreased to about 900 this year. A total of 317 capture operations have been arranged across the city, with 633 wild boars humanely handled.
Ms. Wong indicated that as of Dec. 10 this year, the AFCD had issued 110 fixed penalty notices, of which 12 were related to the illegal feeding of wild boars. In recent years, the issue of wild boar disturbances in Hong Kong has gradually improved. AFCD statistics show that the overall number of wild boars decreased from about 1,830 in 2022 to approximately 1,360 in 2023, further down to around 900 in 2024. The number of wild boar disturbance hotspots has decreased by approximately 64% compared to 2022. Since the beginning of this year, cases of wild boar injuries have decreased by about 80% compared to the 36 cases in 2022.
Ms. Wong mentioned that following the wild boar injury incident on Nov. 15 this year at Lee Uk San Tsuen in Ta Kwu Ling, the AFCD immediately dispatched personnel to investigate, inspecting the area with village representatives and local farmers. They placed several traps and set up surveillance cameras in the incident area to capture the wild boar as soon as possible. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has also implemented modified garbage bins at local collection points to prevent wild boars from rummaging through trash, thereby reducing the incentives for their presence.
