Police install over 600 closed-circuit television cameras in HK
The police launched a plan in April this year to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in crime hotspots across Hong Kong.
Today (Dec. 17), the police announced that they have installed 612 CCTV cameras, largely achieving this year's installation target. Next year, they plan to install over 1,300 cameras, with a total of 6,000 to 7,000 cameras expected to be installed by 2027.
Senior Superintendent of Police Leung Ming-leung stated that the plan has shown significant effectiveness, with the CCTV system assisting in the resolution of 97 criminal cases, including murder, arson, assault, burglary, and robbery.
He mentioned that the current CCTV installations are mainly located on regular lamp posts, smart lamp posts, government buildings, and public transport hubs. In the future, they will explore installing cameras on gantries, traffic lights, and red-light enforcement cameras.
He reiterated that the CCTV systems installed under the plan will only capture footage in public areas. The police will strictly adhere to relevant laws and will continue to communicate with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data to ensure that citizens' privacy is protected.
