Master of blame-shifting: Jimmy Lai passes buck to subordinates for separatist slogan in Apple Daily

Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital and three related companies associated with Apple Daily, are accused of conspiring to publish seditious publications and colluding with foreign forces. Yesterday (Dec. 12), the trial continued in the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, with Jimmy Lai on his 16th day of self-defense.

During the trial, the defense presented a report from the front page of Apple Daily on July 23, 2020, with the headline "Two Systems Cover the Coffin." The defense questioned Lai if he was involved in designing this headline, and whether he and senior Apple Daily staff used this headline to smear national leaders. Lai claimed he had no part in the design, with all responsibilities handled by his Apple Daily colleagues, but acknowledged that the newspaper continued to use the headline design after the implementation of the National Security Law.

When asked if he found the depiction of national leaders in the headline offensive, Lai did not give a direct answer, stating, "I didn't pay attention; it was done by other departments."

The defense further pointed out a photo of a "Hong Kong Independence" flag in the middle of the headline. Lai, in a conversation with Simon Lau on July 2, 2020, was already aware that individuals had been arrested for possessing such flags.

The defense asked Lai if he was involved in the decision to use this photo. Lai denied involvement, claiming he did not pay attention to these details. The judge then questioned Lai's claim of being extremely cautious to avoid violating the National Security Law at the time while being unaware of the continued use of the headline for several days. Lai stated he was not aware because it was the responsibility of the staff.
