Jimmy Lai admits feeling 'encouraged' by US passing so-called democracy act
Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital and associated with three companies related to Apple Daily, is facing charges of conspiring with foreign forces to endanger national security. Today (Nov. 27) marks the 97th day of the trial.
The defense questioned Lai about his contact with "accomplice witness" Chan Tsz-wah, pointing out that between November 13 to November 27, 2019, the two had multiple WhatsApp exchanges, including Lai sending Chan a screenshot of a post stating that the Hong Kong Democracy Council (HKDC) indicated that the US Senate was about to pass the so-called "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act" through a "special procedure" without review.
Lai subsequently mentioned to Chan that Republican Senator Marco Rubio was actively involved in promoting the so-called act and believed it would pass. Lai thought the act would likely pass and felt "encouraged" by this.
On November 27, 2019, Lai and Chan met for the third time in a private car. Lai claimed to have forgotten what was discussed during the meeting but agreed that he had mentioned Sunny Cheung because he felt Cheung wrote well.
Lai also mentioned that he "hoped young radicals would establish their leadership group."
